Disability Evaluation of Polio-vietino in Korea


Abstract
1, 281 disabled Korean children with age between 6 and 20 were evaluated for the causes. The most frequent cause was poliomyelitis (852, 66,5%) and the next frequent cause was cerebral palsy (299, 23,37o). There were noticeable decrease of polio-childne in the younger, where were increasing occurrence of cerebral palsy.
852 polio-children were again evaluated for the extremity involvement, muscle involvement, deformities and leg length discrepancy. Following items are the results.
1. Most polio-childran had lower extremity involvement (96%) and single leg involvement was seen in 56.7%.
2. 694 polio-children were evaluated for the muscle involvement. There were various muscle involvement with irregularity and skipped fashion. Among those muscle involvement, quadriceps femoris and ankle dorsiflexors were involved more frequently.
3. There were various deformities in 842 polio-children evaluated. The most frequent deformity was equinus contracture of ankle _(19.7%), the next was hip flexion and abduction contracture (15.4%) and the 3rd was knee flexion contracture (10. 1%).
4. Leg length discrepancy was seen in 522(617o) poliochildren. The discrepancy between 0. 5cm and, 5cm was seen in 78.9% of the children, and 2. 5cm and 5cm ,.was seen in 57. 176 of the children.
The number of polio-children in Korea was estimated about 45, 000. These childen are to be cared medically and socially (schooling and vocation).
This evaluation work is only preliminary one and to be continued.
